Emergency Health Services Nova Scotia (EHS),
in partnership with the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre
(QEII HSC), operates the Atlantic Health Training & Simulation
Centre (AHTSC). The growing practice of simulating medical emergencies
and scenarios was a driving force behind establishment of the
AHTSC.
The idea of simulation is not new,
simulators have been part of human training as early as Roman
times. Over the past half-century, simulators have become common
place in the fields of commercial and military aviation, space
flight, firefighting, and nuclear power plants.
In aviation, most commercial airlines
require their pilots to train in "Cockpit Resource Management"
using flight simulators with particular emphasis on task delegation,
critical decision making, leadership, pilot judgement, communication,
and crew coordination.
The concept of medical simulation
has evolved from aviation practices. As in the aviation environment,
human patient simulators allow health care professionals to develop
their critical thinking and hands-on skills in a controlled, risk
free environment. Human patient simulators can be used to create
medical emergencies that health care providers must be prepared
to manage, but rarely encounter and thus have limited opportunity
to practice.
The AHTSC provides health care
professionals with practice on hundreds of preprogrammed medical
scenarios. In addition, simulations can be custom programmed to
meet a specific need.

The Charles V. Keating Emergency and Trauma Centre officially
opened its' doors to the public on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. This world-class, 'state
of the art' facility replaces the old emergency department at the QEII Health Sciences
Centre, Halifax Infirmary Site, which sees approximately 150 patients per day.
Emergency care is a cornerstone of health services, a
critical entry point for most patients coming to the QEII Health Sciences Centre, and
an important element of the emergency medicine residency program, linking Capital Health
with the Dalhousie University School of Medicine.
The new Emergency and Trauma Centre is one that Nova
Scotians can be proud of and consider among the best anywhere. Nova Scotians can and do
lead the country in the provision of many medical services, and now we have a new emergency
medicine facility to add to our many assets. All of us at Capital Health have much to
celebrate with the opening of the province's newest and largest emergency and trauma
centre in Atlantic Canada.
It took many hands to open these doors. Every member
of this community shares in the celebration of this accomplishment.
