Emergency Medicine at Dalhousie was first recognized as a distinct medical discipline in 1992 with the formation of the Division of Emergency Medicine within the Faculty of Medicine.
In 1999 the Division became a Department in its own right, with full responsibility for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education, as well as continuing medical education and research in Emergency Medicine.
In 2001 the Division of Emergency Medical Services was formed within the Department. The Division focuses on research in the pre-hospital setting.
