Division of EMS 4th Annual Research Day
On March 20th, 2012, the 4th Annual EMS Research Day was held in the Royal Bank Theatre in the Halifax Infirmary Building.
105 paramedics, nurses, physicians, residents and students attended from around the Maritimes, and as far away as Ontario
and Quebec. This year's keynote speaker was Tim Kilner, PhD, BN, RN, Paramedic, Principal Lecturer in Paramedic Sciences
at Coventry University in the UK. Dr. Kilner's talk was, "If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called
research, would it?", delivered to an interested and engaged audience. In addition, there were 12 papers presented.
Mark Walker, ACP won the Dr. Ron Stewart Top Paramedic Research award for, "Paramedic Clinical Management
of Acute Myocardial Infarction with Fibrinolytics: A Process Map and Hazard Analysis".
The Top Research Award went to Walter Tavares, ACP of Centennial College for "Development and Critical Appraisal of a Global
Rating Scale for the Assessment of Paramedic Clinical Competence."
This year's judges were: Dr Tim Kilner, Dr. Sam Campbell, Dr. Aaron Sibley and Judah Goldstein ACP, PhD©.

On behalf of all members of the Division of EMS in the Dalhousie Department of Emergency Medicine, I would like to welcome
Jennifer Greene who was the successful candidate for the Research Knowledge Translation Paramedic Coordinator po
sition.
This position was formerly called the Paramedic-Evidence Based Practice coordinator and was filled by Jan Jensen and more recently by Darrell Bardua.
In her position, Jennifer will be responsible for all aspects of the PEP database, the P-EBP Level I course, the development of the Level II P-EBP
course and in a few months will take over the Guidelines Appraisal Project (GAP) from Zach Dewar who is off to medical school this fall.
Jennifer earned her Bachelors of Science at Mount Allison University and went on to become a Primary Care Paramedic at the Maritime
School of Paramedicine. Her career in the field has brought her to all regions of the province and over the last 2 years she has
worked in the Emergency Department at the Halifax Infirmary.
Jennifer has been an advocate for prehospital research and has been a research coordinator for several projects including the study
"Cannabis and traffic collisions: A case-crossover study of patients presenting to tertiary care centres in Toronto and Halifax."
She believes that through communication and solid best practice evidence we can continue to cultivate the future of prehospital
medicine and improve the care and outcomes of our patients.
